MT. PROSPECT, Illinois, December 1, 2014 – EMP GRID announces the deployment of the first commercially available Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) and Geomagnetic Storm (GMS) protected enterprise data center and private cloud computing facility in the United States. The new EMP/GMS protected facility is a Tier 3 Enhanced data center (2N) that can protect critical IT infrastructure (network, compute, storage and archive) platforms from the lethal impact of a man-made EMP device detonation and naturally occurring GMS events.
EMP GRID’s Max-Survivability Center is a 2,000 square-foot facility designed and purpose-built for delivering the next generation of ultra-resilient data center infrastructure with enhanced hardening, filtering and protected satellite/terrestrial communication infrastructure. The Mt. Prospect facility is the first commercially available LEVEL 4 protected data center that can deliver 30+ days of continuous operations without external refueling.
Former CIA Director James Woolsey stated that “…an electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, is the most significant threat to the U.S. and our allies in the world. Our food and water supplies, communications, banking, hospitals, law enforcement, etc., all depend on the electric grid. Yet until recently little attention has been paid to the ease of generating EMPs by detonating a nuclear weapon in orbit above the U.S., and thus bringing our civilization to a cold, dark halt.”
In the event of an EMP occurrence, an energy pulse surges through local, regional and (potentially) national electrical infrastructure in a matter of nanoseconds and irrevocably disrupts, disables, and/or destroys virtually all electronics including cellphones, computers, enterprise networks, and the underlying utility power grid. “The senior management and the Board of Directors now face additional risk factors posed by man-made EMP-based attacks and naturally occurring geomagnetic storms. These threats have created a paradigm shift in the enterprise risk profile that requires a next generation data center design to deliver continuous operation for critical IT infrastructure and, fundamentally, protecting the underlying viability of the enterprise”, states Jack Pressman (Executive Managing Director of EMP GRID).
This next generation facility located in Mt. Prospect, Illinois offers four levels of protection from the catastrophic effect of an EMP or GMS occurrence. Protection Level 1 includes protective shielding that blocks the disruptive effects from electromagnetic pulse events. Protection Level 2 offers uninterrupted service upon an EMP/GMS event including mechanical, electrical, and fire protection (MEP/FP). Protection Level 3 employs filtering to protect against the effects of low electromagnetic fields and harmonic distortions caused by a sustained GMS. Protection Level 4 provides for an on-site fuel capacity to support a minimum of 30 days of continuous stand-alone operation with network integrity and operation through deployment of a shielded mobile micro-wave and terrestrial telecommunications infrastructure.
